Horizontal scrolling should be avoided at all costs. I have come across some websites where the designer has tried to be creative by including a horizontal scroll for the main page content. In all such cases, I have found this to negatively affect the usability of the site. Horizontal scrolling for product scrollbars in some element of the page is absolutely fine but never for the page as a whole.
